For a battle song I think it needs a bit higher tempo.
I would also add some brass to the lower end to make it sound more "full".

But as you can read from my score, you did hell of a job here, sincerely awesome! :)

foxhead128 responds:

Thanks! Yeah, I did have some concerns that it wasn't fast enough. I just upped the tempo, so enjoy!

I find it lacks structure. I would definetly mix the drums louder to give a clear sense of rhytm, this would fix alot imho. Now the effect just dominates the whole track with it's 16-hit rhytm.

On the good side, I listened a few of your tracks and you create very strong atmospheres, also in this piece the feeling translates to me as huge halls with minimal decor.

I'd really like to know what kind of videogame concept you had in mind while doing this piece? :)
All in all it's a good track, but the feeling it's trying to translate into just doesn't hit me clear (sorry!!! :D)

But then again, most successfull VGmusic usually is tied to the concept where it plays (plot twists, overall atmosphere etc.)

I was going to give you 3,5 but, hell, it's so well done that you deserve 4. Cheers!

propfit responds:

well if anything i would say the track is about a journey that's what all of the tracks in this little EP of mine are about this one in particular is more about a character that believes they are in control of their lives but in reality they are hopelessly lost

Reminds me very much of Megaman X (4 and onwards on psx) style here. Excellent job!
I wouldn't change anyhting but if I really have to mention something that my ear picked up was the slow parts 0:39-0:52. Personally I would have added a muted guitar or similar sound to the background to keep the tension up. But that's just my opinion based on your own comment how this was supposed to be used on a shooter game :)

I'ts 5 stars from me. Keep it up!

DanJohansen responds:

Thanks for the kind words good sir.. glad you like it, I am a huge fan of game music myself, so now and then I want to make it. Again, thanks man :)

You have great ideas in this piece. Yet it's rather rough as it doesn't quite fit the ambient genre with so strong melody.
+overall feeling
+parts 0:53-01:09 and 01:39-01:52, good ideas but as said, bit rough on the edges :)
-first minute feels bit dragging, maybe a slight variation to the basic melody would keep it fresh
till the first transition?
-Rough on the edges, but easily fixed

3 stars from me, keep working on it! :)

BuddyBlueBomber responds:

I've had quite a few people tell me that it felt "rough," or that it was "missing something." I appreciate the help, but I feel like I'm not at the appropriate skill level as of yet to do much about what I have so far. Maybe in the future I shall improve on this idea. I am glad you pointed out some specific areas, though. Thank you for the comment.

0:54 pause nailed it! I actually started waiting for it when the melody first began playing ("please use the pause as powertrick, plsplspls!")

Everything else seems very well done, but I would've added a bit more force to the drumstrikes (could be my headphones though) as now it doesn't quite reach the dramatic height, if you know what I mean.

Still, that's just a minor flaw which can be easily fixed and doesn't have anything to do with your skill as a composer. It's a 5 stars from me! :)

NemecekMusic responds:

you're right, the drums are too low, this isnt the final version though, the problem is i cant find the final version xD (i remember mixing the drums louder in it) once i find it ill upload.
thanks for the review!

Reminds me of FF8 soundtrack, good job there.
Maybe because of that I'm feeling that it's missing a flute? It would add greatly to the fullness to have few light flute arpeggios (or such) earlier than at 2:03 when you do it with the choir.

Still, it's not song breaking, you get 4,5 from me. Very enjoyable till the end!

Rhombys responds:

Thank you for you comment. A flute would be nice.

The sound you use in the melody starting at 1:21, I find it too aggressive to be listened on headphones. At clubs though, it would cut awesomely through crowds. It's a matter perspective, do you want this to play at clubs or be listened on walky/com. I would definetly listen to this repeatedly if it was smoother :)
Also I find the amount of bass lacking (but that's a matter of taste)

On the brighter side, everything is exceptionally balanced.

Keep up the good work!

NinjaTomatoes responds:

yeah, I see what you mean. There was a fair amount of background noise so I chose the synth on purpose, though. I wasn't really thinking too much about audience when I made this, but I guess it would work nice w/ a crowd. When making the song I was thinking more of the melody and chords and that kind of thing rather than the drums/bass.

Glad you enjoyed it overall! :)

Excellent ambience, but it still leaves me wanting and waiting for that B part of the song (modulations, anything, give me anything). It would dramatize the feeling (could be happy or sad).

That said, you get my 4.5 because you left me waiting for more, you...! :P

jvonm responds:

Yeah, a B section with some different chords and movement would give it some dimension! I can't wait to develop the song further.

Thanks for the rating.

Your style hits a bullseye! Honestly after 2mins I'm longing for a modulation though, but it's nothing songbreaking since there is enough variation to keep it intresting till the end. Excellent job man!
